Training Amid Tet Festivities
Returning to Ho Chi Minh City after a week away for the Tet holiday has been a refreshing transition back to my daily routine. Despite the challenges of changing weather and numerous social commitments during the holiday, I made it a priority to maintain my training schedule.
The Tet holiday brought a significant shift in weather—a stark contrast from the usual 30°C heat of Ho Chi Minh City to a chilly 10°C in my hometown. The 20-degree drop presented its challenges, but I was determined to keep up with my daily training.
Instead of my usual 4:30 AM wake-up call, I adjusted to a more forgiving 6:00 AM start. Each morning, I alternated between running and swimming. Luckily, I lived close to an indoor heated swimming pool, which became my sanctuary. The quiet, empty pool allowed me to fully focus on my sessions without distractions. Swimming in winter is rare in my hometown, as the cold weather keeps most people away from the pool.
Returning to the Familiar Comforts of Ho Chi Minh City
Coming back to Ho Chi Minh City felt like a warm embrace. I cherish my routines—waking up early, engaging in training, working on impactful projects, and meeting inspiring individuals throughout the day. My work introduces me to many remarkable people who are dedicated to making a positive impact on the planet, and being back allowed me to reconnect with friends before they left Vietnam for other destinations.
Reconnecting with Nature and Good Food
My Monday started with in-depth reading on the decarbonization of the cement industry in Vietnam—a crucial topic given the nation’s push towards sustainability. The day also involved important meetings and the finalization of a pilot project.
Amidst the hustle, I took a leisurely five-minute walk from my office to Quan Bui Bistro, where I had brunch with a friend. The stroll under the warm sun felt refreshing, a welcome change from sitting in an air-conditioned office. The gentle chirping of birds and the vibrant energy of the streets added to the charm of the walk.
As I approached Quan Bui Bistro, its beautifully decorated gate covered in lush plants exuded a friendly and simple vibe. Inside, the cozy atmosphere, inspired by chic Indochine design, provided the perfect setting for a catch up.
A Meaningful Conversation Over Brunch
Quan Bui Bistro is one of my favorite restaurant chains in Ho Chi Minh City. With five locations scattered across the city, it offers a culinary journey through Vietnam’s rich heritage, serving traditional dishes from the North, Central, and Southern regions. Each location captures a rustic yet elegant charm, blending the essence of Vietnam’s timeless beauty with warm hospitality. Dining here feels like stepping into a nostalgic retreat, where flavors tell the story of Vietnamese culture. I love that I can savor authentic specialties from across the country without the need for long journeys. The cozy ambiance and friendly service make it a perfect spot for gatherings with friends and family, creating memories over delicious, heartwarming meals.
I made my way to the second floor, where Cat was sitting by the window, sunlight spilling across the wooden table. We ordered a few dishes — hearty brown rice and refreshing herbal drinks — and began our conversation. Over lunch at Quan Bui, I had a delightful catch-up with Cat Thu (we often call her by her nickname, “Cat”). She’s one of those rare individuals whose passion for creating a positive impact is both inspiring and infectious.
Cat was among the pioneering generation of Vietnamese students awarded UWC scholarships, attending UWC Costa Rica in 2006. Later, she earned a full scholarship to study Mechanical Engineering, Energy Studies, and International Development at MIT. At 26, Cat was already recognized as one of Vietnam’s most talented young engineers, holding two U.S. patents. Yet when asked about her inventions, she lights up talking about her love for writing. Every day, she dedicates time to crafting 200 words of fantasy fiction. This seemingly unrelated habit fuels her creativity, guiding her toward unexpected breakthroughs.
Finding Joy in the Everyday
Being back in Ho Chi Minh City has reignited my appreciation for the simple joys—whether it’s an early morning training session, a productive workday, or meaningful conversations with friends. As I continue to navigate my journey, I remain grateful for the opportunities to grow, connect, and make a positive impact.
