Embracing the Cool Evenings of Ho Chi Minh City
As the cool evenings grace Ho Chi Minh City this time of year, I find myself savoring the crisp air that makes December the coldest month in this bustling metropolis. Whether it’s the gentle chill of early mornings or the cool breezes at dusk, these moments offer a refreshing pause from the city’s usual heat. Yet, even as I appreciate this fleeting weather, I can’t help but reflect on the deeper work that fills my days—mentoring young dreamers and empowering future leaders through education.
This week, as I sift through the applications of finalists for United World Colleges (UWC) scholarships, I’m deeply inspired by the stories of students from all over Vietnam. Many hail from small towns, yet they harbor big dreams of exploring the world. Their academic achievements are impressive, but what truly moves me is their dedication to creating meaningful social impact in their communities. From organizing environmental campaigns to leading projects for underprivileged children, these young souls are already making a difference.
The Transformative Power of Education
Education is a gift that has the power to transform lives—not just for the individuals who receive it, but for the communities they touch. Imagine the ripple effects these students could create if given the opportunity to pursue global education. Their local projects could expand into regional or even international initiatives, amplifying the positive change they’ve already begun.
As part of the UWC selection committee, I feel privileged to play a role in identifying and supporting these bright, driven individuals. This year, we carefully reviewed hundreds of applications and selected 54 outstanding candidates to participate in two days of group activities. Choosing who advances to the next round of online panel interviews is no easy task.
One of my fellow committee members will be conducting interviews from the U.S., balancing early morning hours with our evening sessions in Vietnam. This kind of dedication reflects the collective passion of our team to nurture these young talents. As we prepare for these interviews, I can’t help but reminisce about my own journey with UWC.

Coming Full Circle: From Student to Mentor
Back in 2011, I was the one nervously sitting in front of the UWC panel. I remember being asked whether I would return to Vietnam after completing my education abroad. Without hesitation, I answered yes. Today, I feel a deep sense of fulfillment knowing that I’ve stayed true to my word. The opportunities I received through UWC have shaped my life profoundly, and now I have the privilege of helping others embark on a similar journey.
This work is a chance to give back to a cause that has given me so much. Supporting education, especially for those who might not otherwise have access, is my way of contributing to a better world.
Balancing Passion, Work, and Self-Care
The past week has been a whirlwind of activity, balancing scholarship selection, work responsibilities, and my personal training. However, I’ve learned the importance of listening to my body and taking time to rest when needed. After battling a severe sore throat and a persistent cough, I made the conscious decision to scale back on training for a week.
Instead of pushing through long sessions, I opted for light runs and cycling over the weekend. Coupled with plenty of sleep, extra vitamin C, and soothing cups of hot tea, this slower pace allowed my body to recover naturally. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of busy schedules, prioritizing health is essential for sustaining the energy to give our best in all areas of life.

Looking Ahead: Tet and New Beginnings
As the Tet holiday approaches in just two weeks, I can feel the excitement building in my heart. This is a time of renewal, reflection, and gratitude—a perfect moment to pause and appreciate the journey so far while setting intentions for the year ahead.
In the coming week, I’ll be diving back into a full schedule of training, work, and scholarship interviews. Each task feels purposeful, driven by a shared belief with my team in the transformative power of education. Together, we’re working to create opportunities for the next generation, empowering them to dream bigger and achieve more.
Why Education Matters
There are countless causes worthy of support, but for me, education stands out as the most impactful. It has the power to break cycles of poverty, open doors to new possibilities, and equip individuals with the tools to shape their futures.
My life has been profoundly changed through education, and I’m committed to paying it forward. The UWC movement embodies this philosophy, fostering not just academic excellence but also a sense of global responsibility and compassion. By investing in education, we’re building a better world.
As I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded of the importance of collective effort. The work we do as a committee is just one piece of a larger puzzle. It takes a community of educators, mentors, donors, and supporters to create these life-changing opportunities.
To anyone reading this, I encourage you to think about the causes that matter most to you. Whether it’s education, environmental conservation, or social justice, there’s always a way to contribute. Even small actions can have a big impact when done with intention and care.

Closing Thoughts
As the cool evenings of Ho Chi Minh City continue to remind me of life’s fleeting yet beautiful moments, I’m filled with gratitude for the work I get to do. Supporting education is not just a passion—it’s a purpose that brings meaning to every step of my journey.
To the young dreamers out there, keep reaching for the stars.
