Reflections on UWC Scholarship Selection Days

A Transformative Experience

It’s been two days since the conclusion of an extraordinary weekend filled with meaningful connections and transformative experiences. As I sip on ginger tea and reflect on the UWC scholarship selection days, my heart overflows with gratitude. The two-day event was intense and demanded a significant amount of energy, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I felt truly privileged to meet 54 bright, young minds from 27 provinces across Vietnam. These students came with hearts full of hope, dreams, and determination, but also with fears and uncertainties about life’s challenges.

A New Approach: UWC Days

In previous years, the UWC selection process allowed candidates to stay wherever they chose—with family, friends, or sometimes even with UWC alumni in Ho Chi Minh City who graciously hosted them. This year, however, the selection committee decided to try something different. We introduced “UWC Days,” a new initiative designed to replicate the communal living experience of UWC campuses. By bringing all candidates together to live in one shared space, we hoped to create a sense of unity and camaraderie.

At UWC, living together on campus fosters deep friendships and unforgettable memories. For me, UWC days evoke vivid recollections of walking in the woods at night, gazing at the stars from the school’s observatory, and enjoying countless moments of laughter and connection. We wanted to offer the candidates a glimpse of this unique environment, even if just for a weekend.

Overcoming Challenges

Making this vision a reality was no small task, particularly given our limited funding. This year, we expanded the selection process to include 54 students, a significant increase from previous years. To ensure equitable access, we provided financial aid and logistical support to many candidates, enabling them to travel to Ho Chi Minh City from various parts of the country.

Another challenge was finding suitable accommodation for all the students in a safe and central location. We also needed a venue for the selection activities within walking distance of the accommodation. Thanks to the tireless efforts of anh Khoa, Director of UWC Vietnam, and Dex, the program coordinator, we found an ideal location in District 1 that met all our requirements. Their dedication and resourcefulness deserve immense kudos.

A Weekend of Bonding and Growth

The weekend was nothing short of magical. Watching the students bond, share, and support one another was incredibly moving. As the chairwoman of this year’s selection committee, I felt a profound sense of joy seeing these young individuals forge meaningful connections and friendships.

Over the two days, we organized a series of interactive activities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a single shared space. These activities were carefully designed to encourage collaboration, communication, and mutual understanding. Tung, a UWC alumnus, and Chau did a fantastic job facilitating these sessions. Their guidance ensured the candidates felt comfortable and engaged, creating an atmosphere of trust and openness.

There were countless moments of laughter, discovery, and inspiration. Many students later shared that the experience was life-changing for them. It wasn’t merely a competition for a scholarship; it was an opportunity to grow, connect, and dream together. Towards the end of the second day, emotions ran high as students expressed their love and gratitude for their newfound friends. Some even shed tears, deeply moved by the bonds they had formed.

A Unique Exercise in Empathy

One of the final activities we asked the students to participate in was particularly poignant. Each student was tasked with writing a recommendation for a fellow candidate they believed deserved the UWC scholarship. The room grew silent as everyone focused intently on their writing. Observing this moment, I was deeply touched by the thoughtfulness and sincerity they poured into their words. It showed the values of empathy and mutual support that are central to the UWC spirit.

Looking Ahead

In the coming weeks, some of these candidates will be invited to panel interviews as the selection process continues. Unfortunately, not all of them will receive scholarships due to limited availability. However, every single one of these young individuals is remarkable, brimming with potential, and deserving of recognition.

For me, being part of this process has been an honor. It has allowed me to give back to the community and witness the incredible talent and resilience of Vietnam’s youth. Their dreams and aspirations are a source of inspiration, and I feel fortunate to have played a role in their journey.

The Transformative Power of UWC

Reflecting on the weekend, I am reminded of the transformative power of the UWC experience. It’s not just about academic excellence or prestigious scholarships. It’s about nurturing global citizens who are empathetic, resilient, and committed to making a difference in the world. The UWC selection days were a microcosm of this vision, demonstrating the profound impact of bringing young people together to learn, grow, and dream.

As I think back on the laughter, tears, and heartfelt moments shared during those two days, I am filled with hope. Hope for the future, shaped by the bright minds and compassionate hearts of these young candidates. Hope for a world where opportunities like UWC continue to empower young people to create positive change.

Gratitude and Closing Thoughts

None of this would have been possible without the collective effort of so many individuals. From the dedicated selection committee to the UWC alumni who volunteered their time and expertise, everyone contributed to making the weekend a success. A special thank you to anh Khoa and Dex for their work, and to Tung and Chau for their exceptional facilitation.

To the 54 candidates who participated, thank you for sharing your stories, dreams, and courage. Whether or not you receive a scholarship, you are all extraordinary individuals with the power to make a difference. The connections you’ve formed and the lessons you’ve learned during UWC Days will undoubtedly stay with you, shaping your journeys ahead.

As I finish my ginger tea, I am left with a profound sense of fulfillment and gratitude. The UWC scholarship selection days were not just an event; they were a celebration of potential, hope, and the enduring spirit of community. Here’s to the bright future that lies ahead for these incredible young people, and to the continued impact of UWC in transforming lives and shaping a better world.
