As the final selection day for the United World Colleges (UWC) draws near, the excitement and nervousness are palpable. Time seems to fly, and it feels almost surreal to think about how far I’ve come since that spring morning in 2011 when I first embarked on my UWC journey. Back then, I was just a young student from a small town in Ha Tinh, Vietnam, riding a night bus for six hours to Hanoi, carrying nothing but a small backpack filled with hope, dreams, and a passion for learning. Little did I know, this journey would forever change the course of my life.
I was fortunate enough to be one of the six students selected for a full scholarship, and it was at Pearson College in Canada that my life transformed. As a 17-year-old, I had the rare privilege of studying alongside brilliant minds from over 100 countries, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences. UWC not only shaped who I am today but also instilled in me values that guide me every day. The lessons I learned, the friendships I built, and the challenges I overcame at UWC molded my beliefs and identity.

The Vision Behind UWC
UWC was founded in the early 1960s by Kurt Hahn, a German educator with a vision to bridge the cultural, social, and national divides that emerged during and after the Second World War. Hahn understood that education should go beyond academics; it should prepare young people for life. At its heart, UWC’s mission has always been to inspire and empower students to become compassionate global citizens who can create positive change in the world.
The first UWC, Atlantic College, was established in 1962 in Wales. Hahn’s vision was to create a school that would nurture resilience, promote self-awareness, and teach students to handle both success and failure. The selection of students was based on personal motivation and potential, regardless of socioeconomic or cultural background, which made UWC a light of hope for many young people around the world. The scholarship program played a crucial role in ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds could access this transformative experience.

A Life-Changing Experience at Pearson College
Pearson College, located on the beautiful coast of British Columbia, became my home for two years. The natural beauty of the campus was breathtaking, but what made it truly special were the people—students, faculty, and staff who embodied the UWC spirit.
Learning at Pearson was not confined to classrooms. Discussions on global issues often spilled over into the dining hall or late-night conversations in dorm rooms. We debated, challenged each other’s perspectives, and grew together. The diversity of experiences and ideas enriched our understanding of the world and ourselves.
One of the most significant lessons I learned at Pearson was the value of empathy and active listening. Living in such a diverse community taught me that every individual has a unique story shaped by their culture, upbringing, and experiences. Understanding and respecting these differences was essential for building meaningful connections.
Facing Challenges and Growing Stronger
UWC was not without its challenges. Being away from home at a young age, navigating cultural differences, and managing a rigorous academic schedule tested my resilience. There were moments of doubt and homesickness, but the support of friends and mentors helped me overcome these hurdles.
One memorable challenge was participating in the Pearson College community service program. I worked on environmental conservation projects and community outreach initiatives. These experiences pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me the importance of service and responsibility. They also reinforced the idea that even small actions can create a positive impact.
Lifelong Friendships and Unforgettable Memories
The friendships I built at Pearson College are among the most cherished aspects of my UWC journey. Despite our different backgrounds, we formed bonds that have stood the test of time. We celebrated each other’s successes, supported one another through challenges, and created memories that will last a lifetime.
From cultural nights filled with vibrant performances to quiet moments of reflection by the ocean, every experience at Pearson was meaningful. These moments shaped my understanding of community, belonging, and the beauty of diversity.

The Lasting Impact of UWC
The impact of UWC extends far beyond the two years spent at college. The values instilled during this transformative journey continue to guide me in my personal and professional life. UWC taught me to approach challenges with courage, embrace diversity with an open heart, and strive to make a positive difference in the world.
As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of Kurt Hahn’s words: “There is more in you than you think.” These words resonate deeply with me and serve as a constant reminder to push beyond my perceived limits and contribute meaningfully to society.
A Message to Future UWC Students
To those preparing for the final selection day or embarking on their UWC journey, my advice is simple: embrace every moment with an open mind and heart. Be curious, courageous, and compassionate. UWC will challenge you, but it will also empower you in ways you cannot yet imagine.
Remember that the journey is as important as the destination. The lessons you learn, the friendships you build, and the challenges you overcome will shape who you are and who you will become. Cherish the opportunity to be part of this remarkable community and carry the UWC spirit with you wherever life takes you.
Looking back, my journey from that spring morning in Ha Tinh to Pearson College was filled with growth, learning, and transformation. UWC was more than just an educational experience; it was a life-changing adventure that shaped the person I am today. As the final selection day approaches, I am filled with gratitude and hope—gratitude for the opportunities UWC has given me and hope for the future generation of UWC students who will embark on their own transformative journeys.
The UWC has become a movement, fostering global understanding and empowering young people to become compassionate changemakers. For those about to take their first step on this incredible journey, know that you are about to experience something truly extraordinary.
