Weekend
On a serene Saturday morning in Saigon, I engaged in my weekly reflection session—a practice where I dedicate a few hours to introspect on various facets of my life such as health, career, finance, relationships, and contributions. This routine helps me identify what went well and what could be improved, allowing me to evolve continuously. Post-reflection, I summoned a Grab bike and set off to meet my friend, Hippo, for brunch. The convenience of Grab has been a delightful change since my return to Vietnam. I found the subways in London rather stifling; thus, the fresh air while zipping through Saigon’s streets on a Grab bike felt truly liberating.
Our brunch destination was Hum Garden, chosen by Hippo. The name “Hum” originates from the Sanskrit mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’, translating to ‘Om, the jewel in the lotus, Hum’. In Buddhism, the lotus symbolizes the pure heart of the beings, enlightenment, and human compassion. Thus, this mantra essentially represents the blossoming of the enlightened heart within us all, reminding us that enlightenment comes from within.

History
Hum Garden began its journey in 2012, nestled in a historic French villa at 32 Vo Van Tan, District 3. Surrounded by lush greenery and natural light, this quaint restaurant features a charming lotus pond and an expansive salad bar. The ambiance is further enhanced by its cozy nooks where one can unwind and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, from a wooden mezzanine with a large glass dome overlooking the bustling street to elegant sofa seating. The interior walls are adorned with modern Vietnamese art, and the furniture reflects the rich local identity.
As I stepped into Hum, a sense of calm enveloped me, accentuated by the subtle scent of lemongrass that permeated the air, instilling a profound peace within me. It felt like walking into an artful zen oasis. While waiting for Hippo, I settled beneath a verdant plant to journal about my energy in this tranquil setting. Journaling has become a vital part of my life, helping me capture feelings and gather thoughts for my writing. As I inhaled deeply, words began to flow effortlessly.

Ideas
Upon Hippo’s arrival, we delved into our usual enriching brunch conversation, sharing life updates and bouncing ideas off each other. Hippo, a kindred spirit and a generous soul, always strives to add value to the lives of others he encounters. His mindset of giving and sharing offers a refreshing perspective on life. Our discussions ranged from travel to life visions, and I found myself deeply grateful for his friendship and support.
During our conversation, I shared updates about my Sunny Valley project—an initiative I had conceived about a year and a half ago but had temporarily set aside for other pursuits. This time, however, I felt a clarity and determination about how I want to develop it. It seems I am finally ready to take on this significant venture.
As we talked, I realized how vital these connections and moments of reflection are for personal growth and happiness. Saigon, with its vibrant culture and the simplicity of its conveniences like Grab, offers a backdrop that continuously inspires mindfulness and a deeper appreciation of life’s journey. Engaging in meaningful conversations with friends like Hippo in settings that encourage introspection like Hum Garden reinforces my commitment to living a mindful, purpose-driven life.

Connection
This peaceful Saturday was a reminder of the beauty of connecting deeply with others and with oneself. It reaffirmed my belief in the power of a mindful living approach—embracing every moment, every interaction, and every thought with a conscious presence and appreciation.
As we parted ways, the energy and inspiration from our brunch lingered, motivating me to pursue my project with renewed vigor and a clear mind. Saigon, a city that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, continues to be a source of endless inspiration. It is in these moments of quiet reflection and meaningful connections that we find the true essence of a fulfilling life, rooted in mindfulness and enriched by the relationships we cherish.
